Tangem Unveils Crypto Card Amid Global Access Challenges

Swiss crypto wallet provider Tangem has announced the launch of its first physical Visa card, aimed at facilitating in-store and online purchases as well as ATM withdrawals. The initial rollout is limited to 5,000 cards, and users can fund the card directly from their self-custodial wallets. However, Tangem faces significant challenges in terms of global access, as it cannot ship cards to around 20 countries, including China and Russia, due to regulatory and compliance issues.

This launch underscores a growing demand for crypto payment solutions, particularly in regions where traditional banking services are limited. According to Tangem, over 40% of their payments come from Latin America, while more than 30% originate from the U.S. This disparity highlights a critical issue: while demand for crypto cards is rising, the regulatory landscape and banking infrastructure are not keeping pace. Andrey Ilinskiy, head of Tangem Pay, emphasized that the intersection of demand, regulation, and banking infrastructure does not always align, creating gaps in availability.

Looking ahead, the crypto community will be watching how Tangem navigates these regulatory hurdles and whether it can expand its card access to underserved markets. The introduction of cashback rewards in USDC stablecoin may also attract users, potentially increasing adoption in regions where crypto serves as an alternative financial system. As the global landscape for cryptocurrency continues to evolve, Tangem's efforts could pave the way for broader acceptance and usage of crypto cards worldwide.
