Nigeria’s PAYE Tax Revenue Surges 40.3% Amid Wage Increases

Nigeria's 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) reported a remarkable N2.64 trillion in Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) tax revenue for 2025, marking a significant 40.3% increase from N1.88 trillion in 2024. This surge reflects a broader trend of rising tax collections across the nation, with total tax revenue jumping to N3.79 trillion, up 41.2% from the previous year, as states intensified their tax collection efforts amidst a backdrop of increased salaries.

The context for this growth lies in the recent wage increases implemented across Nigeria. Following President Bola Tinubu's approval of a new minimum wage of N70,000 in July 2024, many states began adjusting their payrolls to align with this new standard. This not only boosted disposable income for workers but also expanded the tax base, as more individuals fell into taxable income brackets. The increase in PAYE, which constituted 69.5% of total state tax revenue, underscores the importance of payroll taxes in Nigeria’s fiscal landscape, particularly as states seek to diversify their revenue streams.

Looking ahead, it will be crucial to monitor how these tax revenue increases impact Nigeria's broader economic stability and growth. With ongoing inflationary pressures and a need for macroeconomic reforms, the sustainability of this revenue growth will depend on effective tax administration and the ability of states to manage public spending efficiently. Additionally, the performance of listed companies on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) in response to wage adjustments will provide further insights into the health of the economy and its potential ripple effects on both local and global markets.
